FYILiving reports the study had participants pushing 35 lbs. on a treadmill and that the results, which were favorable, are one reason stroller fitness chains are popping up across the country. If you’re a new mom concerned about pregnancy weight gain, the stroller workout might be the perfect new workout to try.
SHAPE touts Krav Maga, the official self-defense system of the Israeli Defense Forces, as a form of hand-to-hand combat that promises an intense workout. Intervals of kicks, blocks and punches are mixed with rest sessions, making this a functional workout that takes time to learn but is worth the kick butt results.
Forza: The Samurai Sword Workout
Forza, Italian for “strength,”uses sword fighting motions to tone muscle, build endurance and condition the mind. Its creator, New York fitness trainer Illaria Montagnani, tells The New York Times it helps strengthen concentration, too.
Unnata® Aerial Yoga
Participants in Betty Stella’s class practice yoga suspended in a hammock from the ceiling. Unnata® Aerial Yoga, offered at the Yoga Center of Minneapolis, came about after Stella wondered if her aerial acrobatics background could be fused with her love for yoga. A quick search led her to Michelle Dortignac’s New York-based Unnata® Yoga, and she signed up for workshops. That was two years ago. Today, Dortignac tells Star Tribune the struggle to convince people this is not a trendy spinoff continues. The hammock, she says, is a tool no one other yoga classes had yet concentrated an entire curriculum on. Fans say they love the rush of endorphins that comes from hanging upside down.
Webb’s Pro Fitness is one of just a few centers in Norwell, Massachusetts taking the Zumba movement to the pool. Zumba, the fun cardiovascular-dance workout that’s often set to Latin music, is usually done on dry land. Co-owner Amy Webb knows the benefits of water workouts (the resistance in water is 12 times more than air!), and went to Florida to obtain certification to teach Aqua Zumba. In an interview about the niche class Webb says the class is wildly popular with young and old alike.
